The Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority (AAATA) is set to begin expansion of public bus services beginning in August. The expansion is a result of the passing of a .7 mil tax increase. Of the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township residents who cast a ballot, an overwhelming 71 percent voted to pass the tax increase.
Ann Arbor Area Tax Increase Benefits-AAATA
The tax is expected to raise $4.4 million each year for the next five years. Funding will be used to increase The Ride services by 44 percent, including extended night and weekend hours, adding buses and trips, and redesigning routes. A new route to Ypsilanti is anticipated this year.
The main goal of the expansion project is to increase mobility for all area residents, especially those reliant upon public transportation. It is also intended to unite the surrounding Ann Arbor areas to promote a solid economic and socially diverse region in SE Michigan. Communities such as Saline, Pittsfield and Superior Townships are also available to purchase service as well.
