AAATA Expansion Tax Will Be On May 6 Ballot

Another big step has been taken to expand TheRide urban core transit services. The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (AAATA) voted unanimously Thursday night to place a tax on the May 6 ballot to cover the cost of the expansion. The tax will raise $4.4 million a year for the next five years.

Seemingly everyone cheered at the AAATA board’s decision, including residents of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township and neighboring communities expected to benefit from the expansion project. The new services will benefit individuals, the economy and the environment. Transit capabilities will improve by 44 percent, increasing work hours, number of buses and routes. Support system upgrades are also included, meaning better “real-time” tracking of buses. There are plans for Saline and Pittsfield and Superior Townships to purchase service as well.
