EPA Announces Michigan Restoration Grants

Michigan Restoration in Lake Erie Basin

Michigan environmental restoration

The Environmental Protection Agency announced a total of 11 grants to be awarded to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for projects in Michigan and Ohio. The bulk of the grants will go toward improving water quality and reducing algal blooms in the Western Lake Erie Basin.

Reducing Nutrients and Sediments to Improve Water Quality

Michigan will receive two grants totaling over $600,000 to improve the water quality in the Western Basin. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be using the money to reduce the amount of nutrients and sediment that flows into the Basin. In addition, 176 acres of wetlands will be restored in the area.

Four more GLRI grants were given to Michigan to improve other parts of the state as well. These grants will fund projects to improve water quality around Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.
