Michigan Hall of Famer Wheatley Returns as RB Coach

Michigan Hall of Famer Wheatley Returns as RB Coach

The good news keeps on coming for UM football fans as @SamWebb77 confirms that former Wolverines great Tyrone Wheatley will return to Ann Arbor to serve as the running backs coach. The UM Hall of Famer will reunite with Jim Harbaugh, who was the quarterbacks coach in Oakland in 2002 when Wheatley was a running back. michigan football tyrone wheatley

Wheatley A Good Fit for Michigan Program

Hiring Ty Wheatley as the RB coach is a great move for many reasons by Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Wheatley was an integral part of a Michigan program during some of its most successful years in recent memory. He was the MVP when the Wolverines won the 1993 Rose Bowl and 1994 Hall of Fame Bowl and was the 1992 Big Ten offensive player of the year.

Wheatley knows what it takes to be successful as an individual and as a team. He can restore levels of grit and pride that have been lacking from some of the 21st century UM teams. Also, having grown up in nearby Dearborn Heights, Wheatley will be a great recruiting tool for local athletes who may otherwise attend an out of state school or that horrible college in green.

Wolverine Assistant Coaches Have Professional Experience

In addition to Wheatley, Harbaugh has brought on Jedd Fisch and John Baxter as additional assistant coaches. Fisch spent last season as offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He will have a similar role next year running the Wolverines passing game. Baxter will be strictly special teams, a tough task to improve a program that ranked near the bottom of Division I football. Fisch and Baxter will join offensive coordinator Tim Drevno and defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin. Drevno is a former Harbaugh assistant in San Francisco, and Durkin held the same position last year at Florida.
